BEHIND THE BOOTH
THE STORY BEHIND OUR GEO WEEK BACKDROP
At Aero-Graphics, we believe that data is more than what we deliver – we believe that it is a story waiting to be told. This backdrop is a celebration of possibilities and is a tangible example of the creativity and innovation that drive our work every single day.
A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON BRYCE CANYON
The unique backdrop from this year’s booth depicts the stunning sandstone pillars of Bryce Amphitheater in Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah. This incredible scene wasn’t merely photographed, it was created from a LiDAR point cloud collected as a part of the 3DEP program in 2018. The highly detailed data gave us a three-dimensional representation of the landscape that served as the foundation for this piece.
THE CREATION PROCESS
Crafting this piece meant turning raw aerial data into an immersive and visually compelling representation of the landscape. Aero-Graphics’ GIS Analyst, Colton Linville, utilized a LiDAR and NAIP imagery point cloud, applying colorization techniques to enhance the imagery before bringing it into 3D modeling software. Through height ramps, color transitions, and vegetation extraction, the landscape was meticulously refined to highlight its dramatic features, showcasing both the natural beauty of Bryce Canyon and the power of modern imaging technology.
“This piece was a unique challenge and a rewarding experience. By combining LiDAR data, colorization techniques, and 3D modeling, I transformed raw data into a dynamic visual story. The vertical exaggeration, in particular, was a deliberate choice to emphasize the dramatic terrain of Bryce Canyon. My goal was to create something that not only showcased our technical expertise but also captured the awe-inspiring beauty of the landscape.”, says Colton.
GEO WEEK PRESENTATION
Bryce Canyon represents more than just a beautiful location. It’s a place we photograph often and something that feels like it’s in our own backyard. This familiarity makes it a natural choice for showcasing our work. By leveraging advanced technologies, we’re able to capture, analyze, and visualize this iconic terrain with incredible precision. Bryce Canyon’s unique geological formations provide the perfect canvas to highlight the capabilities of aerial imaging and LiDAR technology.
We’re excited to unveil this piece at GEO Week in Denver! Whether you’re an architect, engineer, or designer, this backdrop showcases the power of blending technology with creativity. Stop by our booth to experience it firsthand and explore the tools and techniques behind its creation. See you at GEO Week!
